Your Assignment

I’m going to propose that we step into Mr. Peabody’s Wayback Machine.  (from the Rocky and Bullwinkle Show of the 1950’s and 60’s), and return to the glory days for film photography, aka the 1970s.

First, give your DSLR a frontal lobotomy:

  1. Set it to Manual exposure

  2. Turn off auto focus

  3. Select a single ISO setting (64, 100, 160, 400 for your “roll” of Ecktachrome Color slide film - can’t change your “film” during the “shoot”)

  4. If you can, shoot RAW – the built-in JPEG compression also does some automatic “algorithmic corrections”.

Now limit yourself to twenty-four (maybe thirty-six) exposures.  Now you are living within the boundaries of the analog film world.

The Assignment:

With your single roll of “film”, set out to craft some images in the camera.  Any subject(s) you like, but Composition, Focus, Depth of Field, Exposure are literally and solely in your hands.  You have to think about everything.  Everything, so take your time – film and processing are expensive, and you only have one “roll”.  If you found that it is harder than you thought, shoot another “roll” – there is a learning curve…. Load another "roll".

Now the fun part:  The assignment simulated un-editable color slide film, as an exercise in camera discipline, but now It might be fun to “swap” it into negative film, and work through a “darkroom” process of editing (limited): Cropping, and maybe some Exposure and Contrast adjustments.

I’d like to see your best images from this assignment (both original unedited and edited).  You can send them to me at ShadowAndLightGallery@gmail.com.  I still teach Photography at State University of New York, and I would be happy to discuss your work with you.
