Artist's Statement:

High above the crumbling stone castles of Bryce Canyon stands a remarkable tree. Its exposed roots twist into an improbable collection of legs and feet. Its trunk leans forward, its branches reach toward the sky, and the whole creature has acquired the unmistakable posture of a traveler poised to move on.

There is an aura of great age about this unlikely wanderer. In black and white, the landscape becomes other world place of castles, shadows, and gathering storms. The absence of color lends the scene the character of legend, of somewhere before human time time.

Perhaps the tree has stood here for centuries, watching the seasons pass over the canyon and the great stone towers slowly surrender to the endless forces of nature.

   Or perhaps it has been walking all along;

      One step, every century or so.

Alone on the ridge, it surveys an extraordinary kingdom. The gathering clouds deepen the sense of mystery, while the distant plateau stretches toward an uncertain horizon.  Here, the tree stands with the quiet determination of a traveler who has seen a great deal and still has places to go. Its exposed roots speak of long experience, while its branches retain the vitality of a journey is far from finished.

Perhaps it remembers a time when trees wandered freely across the earth. Perhaps it is searching for the forests of its youth. Or perhaps, after a thousand years of watching the same magnificent view, it has simply decided to discover what lies beyond the next ridge.

Summary: A solitary pine with extraordinary exposed roots stands above the ancient hoodoos of Bryce Canyon. Its almost human posture suggests a traveler moving through the centuries at an unhurried pace.
