Artist's Statement:
High above the crumbling stone castles of Bryce Canyon stands a remarkable tree. Its roots emerged from the earth, twist into an improbable collection of legs and feet. Its trunk leans forward, its branches reach toward the sky, and the whole creature has acquired the unmistakable posture of someone poised to move on.
There is an aura of great age about this unlikely traveler. Perhaps it has stood here for centuries, watching the seasons pass over the canyon, the storms gather above the distant plateau, and the great stone towers slowly surrender to time.
Or perhaps it has been walking all along;
One step every century or so.
Alone on the ridge, It surveys an extraordinary kingdom of crimson cliffs, weathered battlements, and slender towers. The gathering clouds lend the scene a theatrical grandeur, an ancient world worthy of legends and wandering spirits. Against this immense landscape, the tree stands with the quiet determination of a traveler who has seen a great deal and still has places to go.
There is something wonderfully reassuring about its unhurried progress. The world may change, mountains may crumble, and centuries may pass, but the tree will continue on its way, following a path known only to itself.
Perhaps it remembers a time when trees could walk freely across the earth. Perhaps it is searching for the forests of it's youth. Or perhaps, after a thousand years of looking at the same magnificent view, it has simply decided to see what lies beyond the next ridge.
Summary: A solitary pine with extraordinary exposed roots stands above the ancient hoodoos of Bryce Canyon. Its almost human posture suggests an elderly wanderer setting out across a vast and timeless landscape. Brilliant red sandstone, distant cliffs, and gathering storm clouds create a dramatic setting for this whimsical portrait of endurance, independence, and the unhurried passage of time.
