In the hall of the king,

where the shadows lie

See full description & specifications

Sunlight streams into the corridors of the Palace of Versailles—washing over stone that has witnessed pomp and ceremony, and probing the shadows of power.

Title: Passage at Versailles

Subtitle: After the Court

Reference: Interior corridor, Palace of Versailles, Versailles, France

Artist’s Statement:
These walls were raised to project permanence—to embody authority so absolute it seemed immune to time. Within them, power was not simply held; it was performed, enforced, and consumed. Yet the same structure that amplified that authority now contains only its echo.

The column stands as a relic of that certainty, its surface worn by centuries that did not ask permission to pass. The light that cuts across it feels less like illumination and more like exposure. It reveals what remains after spectacle has faded—the aftermath of excess, of imbalance, of a world built too heavily upon itself.

The rigid geometry cast by the window recalls a system once obsessed with control and order, yet it fractures across uneven stone, unable to fully impose itself. The light moves on, indifferent. What once demanded attention is now subject to it.

Power, when overextended, can shatter.  What is left behind is complicated.  In a museum of splendor, the shadows are heavy.
