Artist’s Statement
The entry arch of Trim Castle becomes more than architecture—it becomes a lens through which history is gathered and held. Standing within its shadow, the world beyond feels momentarily distant, as if time itself slows before revealing what lies ahead. Across the River Boyne, the ruins of St. Mary’s Abbey rise gently from the landscape, understated yet deeply rooted in Ireland’s medieval past.
Trim Castle, begun in the late 12th century by Hugh de Lacy, was built as a symbol of Norman power—the largest Anglo-Norman castle in Ireland. Its massive stone walls and commanding presence were designed to assert control over both land and river. Yet from within its arch, that sense of dominance softens. The view outward is quieter, more reflective.
St. Mary’s Abbey, founded in the 13th century as an Augustinian house, now stands in partial ruin—a remnant shaped by time, dissolution, and the changing tides of history. What remains is not grandeur, but persistence. Its broken tower and weathered stone speak less of authority and more of endurance.
This composition holds both stories at once: power and passage, construction and decay. The arch frames not only a physical view, but a relationship between two eras—between what was built to last, and what remains despite it. In that framing, the landscape becomes a quiet dialogue between past and present.
