Artist’s Statement:

This image resists being anchored to a place. Instead, it drifts into the territory of recollection—where forms soften, edges bend, and meaning is carried more by sensation than by fact. The sky arcs unnaturally, as though it is holding onto something just out of reach, a moment not yet released. Below, the river becomes a quiet continuum—less water than time itself—absorbing everything, reflecting without judgment, stretching into something infinite.

The trees stand as witnesses. Bare, unmoving, they hold the weight of what has passed without ever speaking it. Their presence is not dramatic, but enduring—like memory itself. What draws me here is not the scene, but the feeling of almost remembering something important. The image exists in that fragile space—where the past begins to surface, but never fully resolves.

Taken in 1977, this image began life as a simple landscape.  I was deeply affected by the surreal post visualization images of Jerry Uelsmann.  Using transparency film (Ektachrome) I added a close up image of straw flowers, reflected in a dent in a silver platter.  The combination turned out as a powerful impossible sunset sort of image. As I often tell my students, “Pictures are taken… art is are MADE!”
