Title: Dream Catcher

Subtitle: A web strung between cattails gathers the first light, each droplet a quiet note in a fragile architecture of dawn—echoing ancient protections woven for those most cherished.

Reference: spider web dew, cattail marsh morning light, Ojibwe legend, Spider Woman dreamcatcher symbolism, fine art photography

Artist’s Statement:

This image lives in the brief interval where night has not fully released its hold and morning has only just begun to speak. The web, revealed by dew, becomes visible not as a trap, but as a structure—intentional, measured, and improbably delicate. In this light, it also carries an echo of story: according to Ojibwa tradition, the Spider Woman watches over the people, and when distance made her reach difficult, mothers and grandmothers began weaving protective webs—charms meant to catch harm before it could settle. Suspended between cattail blades, this web becomes more than form; it suggests care made visible, a quiet act of guardianship stretched across air and time. What is often overlooked becomes luminous here, asking the viewer to consider how protection, like beauty, is often both fragile and enduring.

I took this picture on the shores of my beloved Chateaugay Lake over 50 years ago. It was just after dawn, when the dew shown like brilliant pearls, backlit by the rising sun.  It is still on my wall.
