Artist's Statement:
High above the valley floor, a pale moon hangs among the gathering clouds. Beneath it, the immense sandstone walls of Zion rise toward the heavens, their weathered faces bearing the marks of countless centuries. Wisps of cloud drift across the sky, lending the scene an almost otherworldly grandeur.
There is a particular magic in the relationship between mountains and the moon. One belongs to the earth, the other to the heavens, yet together they create a harmony that has stirred the human imagination since the beginning of time.
This image was conceived as a tribute to Ansel Adams and his celebrated Moon and Half Dome, one of the great masterpieces of American landscape art. Adams understood the extraordinary power of black and white to reveal the character of a landscape. His work transformed mountains, clouds, and moonlight into something approaching the sublime.
Here, the towering sandstone cliffs of Zion provided an iconic setting for that enduring theme. The pale moon emerges through the restless sky, its gentle light a counterpoint to the immense weight of the ancient stone.
The monochrome treatment strips away the familiar colors of the Southwest, leaving a world of texture, shadow, and luminous atmosphere. The clouds gather around the mountain summits, and the moon continues its ancient journey above them.
There is a wonderful sense of permanence in this meeting of earth and sky. The mountains have witnessed millions moon transits. Today, another passes quietly overhead.
Somewhere in that timeless encounter lives the spirit of Ansel Adams.
This one is personal. Ansel Adams was inspirational to me as a young photography student. I still love black and white photography - there is something pure about it.
I tied to recreate his iconic image - a captivating black-and-white landscape, with the moon floating over the towering cliff at Half Dome beneath a swirling sky. The interplay of transient shadow and light among the permanent, the ethereal, and the infinite, touches all the elements of the universe.
