Artist’s Statement:
A winding dirt road leads into the heart of Monument Valley, passing between towering sandstone formations that have become enduring symbols of the American West. A weathered desert tree stands beside the road, its twisted branches bearing witness to the harsh conditions of this ancient landscape.
Monument Valley occupies a special place in the American imagination. Director John Ford brought these landscapes to international prominence through his celebrated Western films, including Stagecoach, Fort Apache, and The Searchers. Against these towering formations, John Wayne and generations of Hollywood actors helped define the visual mythology of the American frontier.
Yet the valley's history reaches far beyond Hollywood. This is Navajo land, part of a living cultural landscape whose people have inhabited the region for centuries, and Ancestral Puebloan peoples for millennia before them. The monuments themselves have stood for millions of years, long before the first people arrived.
The photograph captures both the physical grandeur of Monument Valley and its remarkable place in American cultural history. The road continues toward the distant horizon, carrying with it the enduring romance of the open West.
