1983. Driving along an Irish road, I caught this view in my peripheral vision and immediately stopped, then backed up to find it again. There, below me, was this perfect image—revealed as if it had been waiting. In the soft dawn light, the valley opened in quiet splendor, every field and hedgerow gently defined by gold and shadow. This lock was still operated manually, and the cottage beside it was very much alive with purpose. There was no sense of rush, no intrusion of the modern world—only, function, and continuity. In that moment, it felt as though time had simply paused, allowing a glimpse into something enduring and unchanged.
