Title: First Crossing
Subtitle: Coming of Age in Dingle Harbour, a child rows alone—between shore and the wider world.
Reference: Child Rowing in Dingle Harbor – Irish Coastal Wall Art with Boats and Reflections
Artist’s Statement:
There is a moment—brief, almost invisible—when independence first takes shape. A child rows across Dingle Harbour, dwarfed by working boats and the quiet presence of the surrounding hills. The harbor, long a place of livelihood and passage, becomes something more intimate here: a threshold.
The reflections hold everything in suspended time—the boats, the sky, the child—blurring what is solid and what is imagined. Ireland has always carried its stories in water, in crossings both literal and symbolic. This small journey echoes larger ones: departures, returns, and the subtle shift from being guided to guiding oneself.
It not not just the composition, but the feeling—calm, but charged. The child is alone, but not lonely. The world is vast, but not overwhelming. It is a beginning.
