Artist’s Statement:

Inspiration is the soul of art. This picture was totally unplanned. I was outside grilling dinner and noticed the lawn was full of dandelions, gone to seed. I had a new closeup lens and wanted to try it out. So I picked a perfect dandelion and, using a clothes pin, stood it up on the deck railing. I had no tripod, so I used a book and a kitchen towel to position the camera for a long exposure (it was after 7PM and starting to get dark) I took a few shots... still nothing great. I then remembered I had a flash and a three foot long cord. Suddenly the weed sparked in the light! Then, I had the idea to shake some dandelions over to capture them as they floated down. Fortunately I had lots to work with. 187 pictures later, I had my shot!

I might have burned dinner....

In the end, the work spoke to me about how even the smallest gestures carry consequence, that movement—no matter how subtle—has the power to create new beginnings—an invitation to consider what we hold onto, and what we let go.
