A windswept stretch of Ireland’s southern coast unfolds in layers of green and stone, where the Atlantic presses hard against a land shaped as much by conflict as by beauty. This piece leans into the raw edge of place—where postcard charm meets a past that refuses to fully fade.

Artist’s Statement:
Clonakilty is known today for its beaches and easygoing character, but the land holds a sharper story. From above the fractured shoreline, the neat patchwork of farmland feels almost at odds with the dark, broken cliffs below. The Atlantic doesn’t soften the scene—it hammers it, carving into rock the way history has carved into the town beyond.
This small place has seen more than its share hardship. Burned during the violence of the 1641 Irish Rebellion, pulled again into conflict in 1691 and 1798, and later tied to the tensions of Ireland’s early twentieth-century struggles, Clonakilty carries a past that is anything but gentle. Traces of that history linger—in the land, in the layout, in the presence of ghosts behind its bright facades.
Life here has never been polished. Farms still work the hills, roads cling to the edges, and the sea remains a constant force rather than a backdrop. The greens are vivid, but not soft; the light breaks through, but never fully settles. This work captures that friction—beauty on a foundation of hard truths.

A striking coastal panorama of Clonakilty, where orderly farmland meets rugged Atlantic cliffs—a landscape as gritty and complex as the history it holds.
