Artist’s Statement:
Deep within Bryce Canyon, a forgotten kingdom rises from the desert earth. The architecture is astonishing in its complexity. Broad citadels command the higher slopes, their massive walls crowned with slender spires and weathered parapets.
The warm colors of Bryce Canyon lend these formations a remarkable richness. Sunlight skims across the steep slopes, illuminating the intricate crowns of the hoodoos before descending into the shadows of the ravines. Dark evergreens stand among the formations, their scattered silhouettes providing a sense of scale for these immense structures.
There is an unmistakable romance in these natural ruins. Their broken towers and elaborate battlements recall the medieval fortresses, but these castles have stood through ages long before human history. Their walls have never sheltered armies, their watchtowers have never sounded an alarm, and their narrow passages have remained open to the desert wind.
The vertical composition draws the eye through this labyrinth of natural architecture. In the foreground, a great ruined citadel rises above the slopes, its pale battlements catching the afternoon light. Beyond it, successive walls and towers extend toward the distant cliffs, their intricate crowns standing against the warm red stone. The narrow passages between disappear into unknown shadows.
These castles belong to time, and time is their only sovereign.
